5 Ways the Virtual Console Can Be Improved
Written by Dave

For those gamers like myself who are children of the 80's and 90's, the Virtual Console is a dream come true. Although the Virtual Console has become a huge success, and has introduced many young gamers to the glory of retro-gaming, there are several ways Nintendo can improve the Virtual Console.

5. Extra Features

The Virtual Console lacks supplemental content. Box art, original instruction manuals, documentaries, and interviews with original game creators would add to the experience and provide a historical reference for younger gamers.

4. Customizable Interface

The Wii's channel interface is nice, however it can definitely be improved. Having a sub-channel interface would give the end user more flexibility with organizing their growing game collection. Having the ability to create channels based on such criteria as “game system”, “genre”, and “original release year” can make a great interface even better.

3. 4:3 Auto Resizing

For those of us with wide-screen televisions, playing classic games in a stretched aspect ratio is frustrating. The Virtual Console should have automatic 4:3 resizing as an option so that our favorite games can be presented in their original format without needing to change the Wii's default wide-screen settings.

2. Improved Emulation

Many games suffer from inaccurate emulation. While Nintendo has made updates to games after their initial release (Mario Kart 64 and Military Madness are two examples), more improvements need to be made.

1. Increased Storage Capacity

As our classic game collections grow, so does the need for more storage capacity. With game systems such as NEO-GEO being added to the Virtual Console this year, Nintendo MUST find a solution. Moving games off the Wii memory to an SD card is unacceptable. If an official Nintendo external hard drive isn't possible, then a system update should be made so that third-party external hard drives can be used.
